English Bibles

Origin, History, and Version Information

The Articles about English Bibles are broken into two sections:

Origins and History

This section covers the original writings, Old and New Testament manuscripts, Old and New Testament canons, and provides a history of translation to English.

Bible Versions

This section starts with the King James Version and directly related versions.

The next part addresses how modern English versions need to be qualified, and shows why these qualifiers are important.

Thirdly, I provide information and reviews for several popular versions, starting with a few recommendation versions.

Bibliography - Primary Sources

For Bible Origin & History and Version Information and Reviews

Publishers and Bibles - I used publisher websites and printed information from the various Bibles reviewed, and actual Bible version content. For most reviewed Bibles I own at least one copy, so that my observations are first-hand from printed copies.

Additional Primary Sources:

  • Our Bible and the Ancient Manuscripts (5th ed) by Sir Frederic Kenyon, Harper & Brothers NY Publishers, 1958.
  • The English Bible from KJV to NIV (2nd ed) by Jack P Lewis, Baker Book House, 1991.
  • A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament (3rd ed) by Bruce M Metzger, United Bible Societies, 1975.
  • The Canon of Scripture by F.F. Bruce, Intervarsity Press, 1988.
  • The English Bibles - From the Originals to the Various English Versions by Daniel Stanfield, Self-published public domain, 1999.

I also referenced many unrecorded sources from my personal physical and electronic libraries and from various online sources, but the vast majority of this content was from the sources above.
