Salvation

The Gospel of Jesus Christ Explained

The following is a basic presentation of the gospel, or "good news" of Christ, which is the salvation and redemption of mankind, through placing our faith in Christ, who has redeemed us by His sacrificial death on the cross, which fully satisfied God the Father, as was evidenced by Christ's resurrection.

We are created in God's image for fellowship with him.

All have fallen from fellowship by sin.

The judgement for sin is death.

God sacrificed his son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our sins.

We must place our faith in Jesus Christ, repenting of our sins.

I. We are created in God's image for fellowship with him.

Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 3:8a
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day...

II. All have fallen from fellowship by sin.

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God;

Psalm 14:1-3
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

III. The judgement for sin is death.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Revelation 20:15
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

IV. God has provided his son, Jesus Christ, who willingly sacrificed himself to pay for our sins.

A: God sent his son because of his love for us.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

B: Jesus Christ lived a perfect, sinless life in God's will.

Matthew 17:2, 5
And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Hebrews 4:15
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

C: Christ, in submission to God's will, sacrificially died on the cross for us.

1. Physical death.

John 19:33-34
But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

2. Separation from God.

Mark 15:34
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, ny God, why hast thou forsaken me?

3. Became cursed.

Galatians 3:13 (Deuteronomy 21:23)
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

D: God was satisfied with the atonement for sin.

1. Christ was raised from the dead.

Matthew 28:5-6
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

2. The veil in the temple was rent from top to bottom.

Matthew 27:50-51
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom...

The veil represented a barrier between God and His people.

Exodus 26:33 (Exodus 26:31-34)
And thou shalt hang up the veil under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.

3. Christ was glorified.

Acts 1:9
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

4. Christ was restored to fellowship.

Colossians 3:1
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

5. The Holy Spirit came, as Christ had promised.

Acts 2:1,4a
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost...

V. We must trust Christ as our Savior, placing our faith in Him and repenting of our sins.

A: We must trust Christ for our salvation, there is no other way.

1. No one comes to God except through Christ.

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

2. No one can earn their own salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved though faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

3. We must trust Christ for our salvation.

Romans 10:13
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

B: We must repent of our sins.

While salvation comes by placing our faith in Christ, saving faith is inseperable from repentance. The whole point of salvation is the restoration of man to God from fellowship broken by sin, by the sacrificial death of Christ which paid for our sins.

1. We are accepting Christ's sacrifice for our sins.

I John 2:1-2
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

2. Sacrifice is nullified without repentance. In Isaiah, God rejects Israel's practice of making sacrifices without repenting.

Isaiah 1:11,15
To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

3. Sin cannot be forgiven apart from repentance.

How can God forgive our sins if we are not willing to turn from them? John the Baptist, who preceeded Jesus Christ, baptized the Jews who repented, for the purpose of forgiveness.

Luke 3:3
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

4. God will not even hear our prayer if it is devoid of repentance.

Psalm 66:18
If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

In Conclusion:

All mankind is sinful, unable to approach God and doomed to eternal judgement, but God so loved us, that He sent Christ to sacrificially die on the cross, paying for the sins of the world with His blood. It is left for the individual to receive Christ as his personal Savior by coming to Him in humility and "calling upon the name of the Lord", asking forgiveness and salvation - which Christ promises to all who come to Him.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door. I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. - Revelation 3:20

When we recieve the gospel...

Christ's righteousness is applied to us, All sins, past, present, and future, are forgiven, being fully paid for by Christ's sacrifice on the cross.

We become sons and daughters of God and joint heirs with Christ. We are immediately spiritually reborn and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and guaranteed eternal life in fellowship with Christ in heaven.

Having accepted Christ as Lord, we are under obligation of obedience to God in all things revealed to us in the Bible or by the Holy Spirit, expressly including the spread of the gospel, the study of Scripture, and fellowship together in church.
